The renovation of a street in the centre of Pest has begun

Public transport development works have been underway for almost a month in Budapest's second most densely populated district. As reported by our newspaper , the section of Csengery Street between Podmaniczky and Szondi Streets in Terézváros will be renovated as part of the HE-DO project. The project is being carried out under order Terézvárosi Vagyonkezelő Nonprofit Zrt. and is an investment by the Local Government of Terézváros, District VI of Budapest.

The development consists of 5 main parts:

• construction of a road and parking lane,
• environmental planning,
• stormwater drainage,
• plumbing replacement,
• construction of a watering network and a drinking fountain.

The construction of a new parking lane will alleviate parking problems in District VI, while landscaping and street furniture will increase the sense of comfort for residents.

Demolition work has already started

After informing residents and signposting the temporary change in traffic patterns, the renovation was given the green light.

"We have demolished the concrete pavement of the trail drainage and the cobblestone pavement along the entire section. We replaced the water ridge, put the new water mains on the new track into service, and at the same time renewed the water connections to the houses" - said Gellért Tímár, the chief architect of HE-DO.

The old 10 m wide cobblestone pavement and the asphalt sidewalk on both sides will be rebuilt. The wide carriageway will be narrowed to 3.5 metres, with a 45-degree parking lane on one side and a parallel parking lane with green islands on the other.

According to Gellért Tímár, the demolition of the pavement on the even side is currently underway, and the construction of the Stockholm-style tree trench on the odd side has also started. This will be a large 'wooden' planting trench, into which the gutters of several buildings can be connected, allowing irrigation to be carried out periodically through a drainage surface.

In addition, hundreds of bushes and shrubs will be planted, which will be placed in green islands.

Work is currently progressing better than expected thanks to the unusually mild weather.

As part of the Terézváros 2030 public space renewal programme, the renovation of Csengery Street from wall to wall began on 20 September last year. The aim of the renovation is to make the street quieter, reduce through traffic, and create a more homely living environment with wider pavements and plants. In an earlier Facebook post, the Terézváros Local Government writes: the redevelopment of Csengery Street will be the first example of how – where public utilities and other circumstances allow – bleak inner-city public spaces can be transformed into greener, more liveable community spaces for relaxation.
