Construction work on the Flórián Square flyovers starts, dates are set

The renovation of the more than forty-year-old Flórián Square overpasses has become inevitable and cannot be postponed, according to a press release from the investor, BKK. As we previously reported, their technical condition had deteriorated significantly: they have been damaged by dirt and moisture, and the structure is leaking around the pillars, causing the reinforcing steel to rust and the concrete surfaces to deteriorate.

Following a successful public procurement process, KM Építő Kft. was selected to carry out the construction work and the contract was signed, the capital's transport company is now reporting on the dates on which the work will be carried out. The implementation plans were prepared by FŐMTERV Mérnöki Tervező Zrt..

The renovation is expected to last until spring 2026 and is essential to ensure that the overpasses, which play a significant role in the transport of the capital and the agglomeration, can be used safely for decades to come.

Preparatory work from mid-February, actual construction from the first day of March

The KM Építő will work on the Flórián Square flyovers separately, so one of them will always be reserved for road traffic, and the works will therefore be carried out in two phases. The worksite will be taken over on Friday 14 February and preparatory works will begin - marking the start of the full modernisation of the two-bridge structure linking Szentendrei út and Árpád Bridge, which is essential to the sustainability of Budapest's road capacity.

The actual construction work will start two weeks later: the first phase of the flyover renovation will begin at dawn on Saturday 1 March, when the southern bridge (where traffic is currently heading towards Pest) will be closed, while traffic will be allowed to move in one lane in each direction on the temporarily two-way northern bridge. A new two-lane turnaround will be created in Pacsirtamező Street to help drivers on Szentendrei út towards Árpád Bridge and Pest.

The second phase will start in the autumn

In the second phase, starting in the autumn, the northern bridge will be closed, the renewed southern bridge will allow traffic to proceed as usual from Szentendrei út towards Pest, while towards Szentendre traffic will be able to turn right at the junction below.

After twenty years, it's time for a complete renovation

The Flórián Square flyovers were last renovated in 2002-2003. They need to be modernised to ensure their safe use for decades to come.

During the investment, the experts

• the road surface will be replaced;
• correcting defects in the reinforced concrete slab;
• the insulation will be renewed over its entire width, eliminating the cause of the leaks above the pillars;
• a new reinforced concrete kerb will be built, on which a new, safer guardrail will be installed;
• a new expansion structure and anchorage will be installed at both ends of the bridges;
• repairing defects in the drainage system, the stone pavements of the bridge piers and the concrete surfaces of the piers, head beams and abutments, and
• special attention is also paid to the integrity of archaeological finds.

KM Építő will carry out the upgrade for a net cost of HUF 2.1 billion. The total project cost, including the mandatory reserve, the technical inspector's fee, the official fees and other costs, including VAT, is expected to be around HUF 3 billion gross. The funds required for implementation will be provided by the Municipality of Budapest.
