Unused area of Józsefváros greened with the involvement of locals

Three months before the completion deadline specified in the contract, it completed the renovation of Szeszgyár Street and Szeszgyár Square in District VIII of the capital city, HE-DO. According to the contractor's website website

The project involves the creation of a green promenade in the previously unused area of Szeszgyár köz (the public space between Visi Imre Street and Kőris Street), where a climbing wall, trampoline and benches will be provided for the city's residents. In Szeszgyár Street (the area between Baross Street and Visi Imre Street), a new tree line has been installed and the road and pavement have been renewed.

More comfortable, shadier and greener

The report stresses that the views of local people were taken into account in the design of the project. In a previous article, we also reported that, in addition to local residents, the Budapest University of Technology's Department of Urban Studies was also involved in the design of Rév8 2022.

Based on the proposals received, one of the considerations for Szeszgyár köz was that the future pedestrian promenade should be close to nature, where people can relax, but also have colourful, playful elements. And the design of Szeszgyár Street was based on the need to make it more comfortable to walk along and to provide shade and greenery. To achieve the latter, the water pipes in the path of the future tree-lined street have been relocated and the former double-sided parking has been removed to create a tree-lined street on the even side.

This is what happened during the development

In the completed project, the following items were implemented:

• safe transport, wider pavements;
• raising junctions to pavement level;
• 36 new trees planted in open ground;
• renewed pavements: paving stones on the pavements, asphalt on the roads;
• new street furniture and street lighting;
• playful elements: trampoline, climbing wall, basketball hoop;
• shaded seating and a meeting area with a tree wall;
• playground made of natural materials.
