In Győr, the current traffic-light-controlled junction between Main Road 821 and Kálvária Street is to be converted into a traffic-light-controlled roundabout.

The 821 main road in Győr is one of the city’s major transport and freight routes, linking the 1 and 83 main roads. One of its major junctions is the Kálvária Street junction, where the Győr local authority is planning to redevelop the intersection. The detailed design brief is available at TED.

On this basis, the designer must review the documentation previously prepared, revise it where necessary, and draw up the planning permission and construction drawings required for the works. Tenders for the public procurement procedure may be submitted until 6 October 2026. The design services will be funded from the client’s own resources.

Why is development necessary?

The background to the investment is also set out in detail in the project description for Pályázati Portálon. The main road No. 821 in question is one of the city’s main transport and freight routes. The junction of Main Road No. 821 and Kálvária Street is the first junction on the entire main road to be equipped with co-ordinated traffic lights, where traffic congestion occurs several times a day during peak hours.

This is exacerbated by the fact that traffic turning right from the city centre towards Pápai út is constantly heavy. There is also significant traffic on both branches of Kálvária utca during weekday peak hours.

The proposed spiral roundabout will ensure the flexible flow of both through and turning traffic at the junction. The three lanes on each branch of Main Road No. 821 entering the planned roundabout will provide sufficient capacity for traffic travelling straight ahead along the main road.

They are also developing links for pedestrians and cyclists

In the vicinity of the junction – in line with the junction’s redevelopment – the pedestrian and cycle paths will be upgraded, furthermore, on the section of Kálvária Street leading towards Pápai Road, the existing, undivided footpath and cycle path would be modernised, widened and, in part, re-routed.

The development also includes the refurbishment of the bus stop located next to the junction, the development of car parks and the construction and refurbishment of the associated green spaces.

Based on the design brief, a total of

  • a 652.5-metre road,
  • 593 metres of cycle path,
  • 738 metres of water pipe,
  • 416 metres of sewer pipe
  • and 853 metres of stormwater drainage channels were affected.

The relocation of utility lines also requires a significant amount of work; amongst other things, nearly 4.7 kilometres of overhead power lines and around 2.3 kilometres of fibre-optic cable are involved.

Nearly 3 billion forints in EU funding

The project relating to the construction TOP Plusz is being implemented using funding from . According to the details of the funded project, a non-repayable EU grant of 2.974 billion forints, with 100 per cent funding intensity, has been awarded for the development. The planned completion date for the project is 31 May 2028. The investment is being carried out with support from the European Union and co-financing from the Hungarian state.
