Modernisation of the ELTE VUK building

ELTE's Vezér út dormitory in Zugló is undergoing a partial energy renovation, including the installation of a solar panel system. The tender was won by EBH Invest.

Known to young people as ELTE VUK, the old, ten-storey, tower-like building was built using tunnel technology. Its heating system, mechanical systems and vents are outdated, and a partial modernisation of the dormitory was necessary. The long-term objective of the project is to increase energy efficiency and energy saving.

According to the plans, consumption would be reduced by nearly 2,000 kWh per year. The development includes the insulation of the building's facades and flat roof surfaces, the replacement of facade doors and windows, the modernisation of mechanical systems, and the installation of a solar panel system. According to the announcement in the European Public Procurement Notice, the work will be carried out by EBH Invest Kft..

New insulation for the building

The project will include new insulation on the façade, the flat roof, the attic wall and the plinth. Trapezoidal sheet cladding and eternite pipework under the windows of the rooms will be demolished and replaced by a different coloured rendered façade.

The current outdated structures will be replaced with modern, insulating plastic windows and the barrier-free handrails next to the ramp leading to the main entrance will be renovated and repainted.

The mechanical, ventilated louvred metal doors will also be renovated. The copolyte glass in the stairwell and service areas will be demolished, but retained in the boiler room area due to the need for a fissure-blasting surface.

Emphasis on fire safety

As described, a fire spread barrier is installed between the windows on different levels. In the case of room units and staircases, built-in parapets of the same dimensions as the fire barrier shall be provided to prevent the spread of fire between levels. On the assembly level, fire barriers shall be provided by masonry on the relevant facades.

Modernisation of the mechanical engineering and the cooling and heating system

The entire heating network of the building will be replaced and a new heating network will be installed along the existing system. The existing radiators and associated fittings will also be replaced by new ones. The existing boiler room machinery will be dismantled and replaced by a heating and DHW production system using only heat pumps. Heat will be generated by 4 air-to-water heat pumps. A 1,000 litre hot water tank will also be installed, and an automatic water softener will be installed to fill the water network. A small solar power plant will be installed as a renewable energy source, with a total of 132 solar panels on the façade.

The construction work will be facilitated by the fact that the building will be unused during this period.
