In just 30 hours, 2,000 cubic metres of concrete were poured into the Paks foundation slab

The work phase was carried out in two shifts, involving 180 specialists and 20 mixers.

Whilst the review of the Paks expansion project – which will create an additional 2,400 megawatts of capacity – is still ongoing, construction is continuing with a view to ensuring business continuity, according to the project’s website.

The report provided details of the foundation slab forming the base for the five buildings on the Unit 5 nuclear island. According to the report, the concrete work for the foundation slab, which is on average three metres thick, is being carried out in stages. During the most recent construction phase, in the second week of September, work continued uninterrupted for 30 hours.

During the operation, which took place in two shifts and involved 180 specialists, 2,010 cubic metres of basalt concrete mix of strength class C35/45 were poured into the foundation slab using twenty mixers. The concreting was preceded by the installation of 670 tonnes of reinforcing steel.

In addition to all this, the scope of the works includes, amongst other things,

  • the construction of the construction and assembly base,
  • The construction of the Oktató- és Szimulátorközpont
  • and the excavation of the construction pit for Block 6 to the design level, more than 90 per cent of which has been completed.
