Renovation work starts on new parts of Nyugati railway station
Work will start on the renovation of the Nyugati station crossing and the replacement of the associated platform lift. The work area was handed over on 10 August 2023, according to a press release from MÁV Zrt..
The renovation of the cross walkway connecting tracks WestEnd (1-9) with the Cegléd waiting area, i.e. tracks 14-17, consists of two main parts, one is the renovation of the suspended ceiling, lighting and cladding of the underpass, and the other is the replacement of the existing, but disused, platform lift for accessibility purposes.
The works are being carried out as part of the MÁV Zrt. investment project, financed from domestic budgetary resources and European Union funds under the Széchenyi 2020 programme. The renovation of the underpass is being carried out by Mega-Logistic Zrt. for HUF 378.71 million, and the replacement of the platform lift for HUF 131.45 million by Magyar Építő Zrt..
The underpass can be used during the works
The railway company informed that the renovation of the crossing will start with trial runs. Construction work, which will involve major disruption, is expected to start on 15 August. However, passengers will still be able to use the underpass as the works will only involve a partial closure.
The renovation will include the complete replacement of the suspended ceiling and floor covering of the metro level, including lighting fixtures, new electrical network, drainage, and the renewal of the wall cladding and the set of side doors, including the old stairs. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.The disused platform lift will be replaced by a new 1000 kg steel gantry lift with shaft-mounted electric drive and vandal-proof design.
Before starting the construction works, the necessary design documentation for the installation of the lift must be prepared, and certificates and official permits must be obtained. Work should then start in the autumn and be completed by the end of the year.
