New town square, hotel development and more to come in Mohács

The planning process for several investments is expected to progress in the coming days as part of the Mohács 500 programme of government-supported developments and events in the region, launched to mark the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács.

The programme's managing body Mohács 500 Nonprofit Kft. said in a statement on 20 November that the projects of the programme, which will be implemented with government support by 2026, have regional and historical significance, and their implementation could provide one of Hungary's biggest cultural-tourist drivers.

Four major and several smaller projects launched

The city of Mohács is directly affected by four major projects. These include the local square, the redevelopment of Széchenyi Square, now largely used for car parking, where a car park will be built, the further construction of the Conventual Church and its surroundings, and the renovation of the town hall.

The St John's Hotel on the Danube would be modernised and expanded, the Danube waterfront adjacent to the city centre would be restored and the Sokac meadow would be renovated. The renovation of the Csatatéri Memorial Chapel and the Calvary, the development of the Lajos II Memorial Site, the creation of a visitor centre and the creation of a thematic promenade are also among the ideas to be implemented.

The public procurement procedures to select the designers are underway, with several procedures to be concluded in the coming days with the conclusion of design contracts, the press release said.
