486 years in the service of science
The University of Debrecen is the oldest continuously operating higher education institution in Hungary. The city has played a prominent role in academic and cultural life since 1538, when the Reformed College was founded.
The Hungarian Royal University of Debrecen was founded in 1912 by the Parliament of Hungary, and the Reformed Theological Faculty and the Reformed College were part of the institution, so from the point of view of legal continuity, it is the longest continuously operating university in Hungary.
After the Parliament and the Royal Palace, it was the biggest investment of the era
The foundation stone of the main building of the University of Debrecen was laid in the summer of 1927. The scale of the construction work is indicated by the fact that it was the third largest project in the country after the building of the Parliament and the Palace of Buda Castle. Construction work lasted four years.
Only part of the plans drawn up by Flóris Korb could be realised, but the 6200 square metre main building is one of the most beautiful schools in the country. The eclectic-neo-baroque facade of the university is 108 metres wide. The 700-square-metre glass-roofed ornamental courtyard is surrounded by an arcaded corridor system, where the names of the most famous professors and students are inscribed.
Restoring the plaster and stone facades
The façade of the main building will be renovated for the upcoming anniversary of the university.
During the works, 12,583 square metres of surface area will be cleaned and, where necessary, the plastered and stone facades will be repaired, and the artificial stone elements will also be repaired over a total surface area of 1,120 square metres.
After the repair, the specialists will paint more than 11400 square metres of wall surface.
Three courtyards of the 100-year-old building will also be renewed
In addition, the damaged tin elements of the building will be repaired, and the same will be done with the cornices. The rainwater drainage system will also be flushed.
Renovation work will begin on the eastern façade, followed by the southern, western and finally the northern façades, but the project also includes the renovation of the three inner courtyards and the air shafts.
According to the tender, the company's experts will be responsible for demolishing the pavements, which are not the original ones. These will be replaced by new washed gravel surfaces.
