Medical education in Budapest takes a step forward with the extension of the anatomy building
It will modernise, develop and expand the Épkar Zrt., building on Tűzoltó Street, which houses anatomy training facilities, according to an announcement.
The Department of Anatomy is the only unit of the institution that has maintained its continuity since its foundation in 1769.
The Faculty of Medicine was established in Buda in 1777 and in Pest a decade later. The anatomy building of the university was designed by Géza Mihalkovics in 1897-98 and was the most modern institute of its time.
New floors are added to the building
The 127-year-old building is undergoing a major modernisation. The refurbishment, modernisation and upgrading of the locally listed building complex will be carried out by Épkar's specialists in a phased approach to ensure its proper functioning. The project will involve the construction of a second floor extension and a third floor attic extension in both wings of the Anatomy, Tissue and Development Institute of Semmelweis University, using new internal reinforced concrete and steel load-bearing structures.
The two new wings will house teaching and dissection rooms on three levels, along with associated facilities.
The project will include the renovation and reconstruction of the existing autopsy rooms and the conversion of the two lifts.
The central part of the building will also be modernised
One of the most important tasks for the contractor in the central wing will be the construction of two new reinforced concrete lift shafts. In addition, the water closets and associated rooms will be renovated. The roof space will also be rebuilt, including the replacement of the roof structure and cladding.
Soil probe system installed in the yard
The works cover the entire floor area of the building, 7958 square metres. The building on the west side of the building will be demolished and replaced by a new basement service building.
A ground probe system serving the modern heating and cooling system will be installed in the courtyard. A special underground construction will be used to drill 52 probes to great depths to provide heating for the building using heat extracted from the ground. The installation of the geothermal heat pump and the demolition of the building on the site also included the complete landscaping of the courtyard. This will include 500 square metres of landscaping, new plants, a road network and 900 square metres of paving.
A special cleaning process gives a new lease of life to the facade of exposed brick
The entire building's mechanical systems will be modernised to meet 21st century requirements. In addition to a heat pump heating and cooling system, a new fire alarm network and fire safety upgrades will be carried out. The project also includes upgrading the lighting and the electrical network.
The works will also affect the façade of the building, with 3,750 square metres of exposed brick being renewed through a historic cleaning process.
