Basin correction, capacity expansion, reinforcement of weirs - flood protection improvements to protect the Danube River against the effects of Danube floods.

R.E.D-HUNGARY Zrt. will carry out a 257 m long bank reconstruction along the Lánka stream in Dunaszekcső. From time to time, the settlement in Baranya faces a significant risk of backwater during Danube floods as the stream flows through several kilometres of the village.

Flood protection requires significant resources and effort

Over the past two decades, all major floods on the Danube – in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2013 – caused significant water damage to the settlement due to the disorderly state of the mouth of the Lánka stream. The residents of Dunaszekcső were protected during the flood periods by the temporary filling of the stream bed, which required significant resources. The Lánka Stream flows through the inner area of Dunaszekcső for nearly two and a half kilometres and empties into the Danube within the settlement, at river kilometre 1459.67. In the interests of the safety of the settlement, the Local Government of Dunaszekcső announced a public procurement procedure for the implementation of water management and flood prevention works. The project involves the reconstruction of the mouth of the stream, as well as the gradual stabilisation of the riverbed and the construction of slope protection.

Stone on stone

According to the public procurement notice, the municipality's administration has entrusted the contractor with, among other tasks, the placement of a minimum of 40 cm of soil stone on the bed of the stream at the mouth of the stream, where the strong erosion processes require stabilisation of the bed, using an average of 1.5 cubic metres of material per metre.
In the section of the stream bed between 0+010 - 0+025 km, the water path has been
directed, also severely eroding the right bank of the stream, which is also threatening the stability of the high bank. At the marked location, the contractor's specialists will have to install 15 m of Gabion stone barriers with surface protection.

The Lánka stream will be widened and returned to its original channel

On another stretch of the Lánka stream, the flood risk would be reduced by increasing the capacity of the riverbed. The temporary spillway will be constructed with a 1.5 m bed width and a 1:1.5 slope. The project also includes the repositioning of the bed between sections 0+075 and 0+248 km, back to its original track. In the indicated section, 173 metres of the dilapidated stream bed will be rebuilt with precast reinforced concrete bank elements.
The area affected by the works includes a pedestrian bridge with a brick
deck. This section is heavily exposed to sediment loads. In addition to cleaning the area, the contractor will also dismantle and rebuild the bridge's overhead girder. The municipality will carry out the works with EU funds.
