With the selection of the contractor, the renovation of the Mohács Battle Memorial can begin.

Work worth nearly 5 billion forints can begin at the Mohács National Memorial Site. The winning contractor, AKTÍV Ipari, Építőipari és Kereskedelmi Kft., will renovate the facility in Sátorhely, according to information available at TED.

The development, which was launched to mark the 500th anniversary of the battle and is being implemented with an investment of Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium , is to make the complex accessible to visitors in its renewed form from the spring of the anniversary year.

„Wall of Heroes” for fallen soldiers

The memorial site at the camp will undergo functional upgrades and landscaping and landscape architecture interventions.

As part of this, the Mohács National Memorial, inaugurated on 29 August 1976, will be completely renovated and a new exhibition space showcasing the Battle of Mohács will be created.

The „crown building”, which functions as a reception building, will be renovated, and the upper dome level will be replaced and a passageway leading to the lower exhibition space will be constructed. The project also includes the creation of a new underground exhibition space, together with the associated service rooms.

A new chapel is being built, which will feature colourful glazed ceramic tiles (such as Zsolnay tiles) and a three-part wooden gate. Behind the gate will be the „Wall of Heroes”, on which the names of fallen soldiers identified through historical research will be inscribed.

The deceased are given a worthy place

In the ossuary (chapel crypt) beneath the chapel, a space will be created that is suitable for the burial of the remains of approximately 500 people, partially identified and exhumed from mass graves. Taking into account considerations of respect, the space will be designed in such a way that it can be researched in the future.

In addition, a new storage building will be constructed, along with an access road. The reconstruction of the Gate of Hades is also part of the project. During the reconstruction, the missing bronze elements (bone-like components) will be replaced and the stone elements will be replaced or renovated.

The landscape architecture works will renovate the memorial area – the mass grave site – and the entire garden. As part of the project, the circular walkway symbolising the circumambulation of the Mohács Calvary will be reconstructed, the mass graves will be uniformly planted, the garden's vegetation will be renewed, and reception areas for memorials symbolising Central European cooperation will be created.
