The development of the road and utility networks for the logistics base near Liszt Ferenc Airport has been completed
The Colas Alterra has been completed on behalf of VGP Park BUD Aerozone Kft., involving the construction of the VGP Park Budapest Aerozone II comprehensive infrastructure.
During the works, approximately 8,000 metres of water mains and an electrical cable network of a similar length were laid to supply the logistics hall and its surroundings, the project’s site manager told our portal. The site manager for project Colas Alterra added that the collaboration between VGP Park and the civil engineering firm’s specialists is not a new development. Previously, on behalf of VGP, Colas Alterra also carried out the infrastructure works for the Aerozone I A–C and B halls.
The infrastructure of the new logistics centre and its surrounding area has been upgraded
Located on the border between Üllő and Vecsés, at the junction of the M0 ring road and the M4 motorway, the VGP Park Budapest Aerozone site offers 125,000 square metres of leasable space. At this logistics base, situated just 1 kilometre from the airport, the focus of Colas Alterra’s most recent contract was the construction of the infrastructure for logistics centre C.
The civil engineering firm’s tasks extended beyond the direct servicing of the new hall; it was also required to construct the water supply, sewage and rainwater drainage systems around the building. In addition, the project included the installation of the external electrical network and road construction.
A new, 8-kilometre-long water supply pipeline will serve the new logistics centre
One of the most important, though less visually striking, elements of the project was the development of blue infrastructure. Thanks to this development, rainwater can now be channelled away in a controlled manner, and oil separators have also been installed in the system to prevent pollutants from lorry and car traffic from entering the sewer network.
The scale of the works is clearly illustrated by the figures: around 8 kilometres of water mains were laid, and a similar volume of electrical substructures and cables were installed; in addition, the contractor’s specialists carried out earthworks involving the movement of a further nearly 40,000 cubic metres of earth.
Networks have been built that can be further expanded without the need to dig up the road surface
A key element of the project was the construction of a pressure-boosting facility with a capacity of 2×50 cubic metres, which will be capable of meeting the future, growing demands of the entire Aerozone II complex.
During the external electrical works, the power supply for the outdoor lighting, the gatehouse, the sewage pumping station, the sprinkler machine room and the electric vehicle chargers was completed, as were the infrastructure works for the fibre-optic and low-voltage networks.
The site manager explained that spare protective conduits have also been laid beneath the paving, meaning that even in the event of future extensions, there will be no need to break up the existing paving.
Bus stops, roundabouts and new road links will improve accessibility
In addition to improving the immediate infrastructure of Building C, the Colas project has also enhanced access to VGP Park Aerozone. As part of the project, a local road and two bus stops were built to ensure that the logistics hub is accessible by public transport.
The road network was developed following soil stabilisation
At the logistics base, the surfacing was constructed in accordance with its intended functions and the expected load. Paving stone surfaces were laid for pedestrian traffic and car parking areas. Asphalt and basalt surfacing were used in areas subject to heavy lorry traffic.
The project utilised 15,400 cubic metres of andesite and 6,000 cubic metres of CKT. In addition, 12,500 square metres of basalt concrete and 19,400 square metres of asphalt surfacing were laid. The specialists also laid paving stones over a further 3,800 square metres and installed 4,500 metres of kerbs. Furthermore, lime-cement soil stabilisation was carried out over an area of 40,000 square metres.
More than 60 people were working on site
More than 60 people, including our own staff and subcontractors, were involved in the project. A substantial fleet of machinery was deployed on site: bulldozers, rotary excavators, backhoe loaders, front-end loaders, self-loading and tipper lorries, as well as two asphalt paving trains, all of which supported the implementation of the project.
One of the project’s greatest challenges was not any single individual task, but rather the coordination of parallel processes: utility works, road construction, paving works, material delivery, and the external and internal works on the building all had to be scheduled and carried out simultaneously. According to the contractor, the key to the project’s success lay in close coordination, maintaining constant contact with subcontractors and suppliers, and the smooth flow of information.
Despite the adverse winter weather and the tight deadline, the work has been completed and the entire infrastructure is now in place. The work carried out at Aerozone II has thus not only created the facilities to support a new logistics centre, but has also established the blue infrastructure and utility networks that will underpin the long-term operation of the industrial park.
