Community planning for the main pedestrian promenade on the hillside of Békásmegyer began back in 2016. The project gained new momentum last year, and they are now looking for a designer.

Vízorgona Street and the promenade running through the Békásmegyer housing estate constitute one of the capital’s most distinctive green corridors in a late-Socialist housing estate. The promenade functions as a continuous pedestrian and recreational axis amongst the densely built-up rows of ten-storey prefabricated blocks. From the outset, its aim was to provide a traffic-calmed community space: it separates the residential blocks from motor traffic with playgrounds, benches and extensive green spaces. The streets of the Békásmegyer housing estate have been given names linked to a musical theme; the name Vízorgona also refers to the ancient mechanical instrument, the hydraulis.

The Óbuda-Békásmegyer Local Authority is seeking a contractor to draw up the detailed design plans for this project. The successful bidder will have 215 days to rethink the housing estate’s main pedestrian route.

The deadline is 14 September.

The conceptual plan is based on community planning

Community planning for the area was launched back in 2016; the aim was to regenerate the neighbourhood’s most important public space by taking residents’ views into account. Although the project did not progress beyond the idea stage at that time, the local council put its implementation back on the agenda in the autumn of 2025.

The project has now reached the stage where the winner of the tender can draw up the planning permission and construction plans for the comprehensive development of the Víziorgona promenade. The area covered by the plans is Víziorgona Street in Budapest’s 3rd district, specifically the section between Csobánka Square and Zsirai Miklós Street and Dózsa György Road.
