Construction of Kőszeg’s new transport hub is set to begin

Construction of the Kőszeg intermodal transport hub can now begin. Our website previously reported in detail on the preparations for the project and the related public procurement procedures. The project may be carried out by Generál Mély- és Magasépítő Zrt., with 23 months available for implementation.

Rail and bus services will be brought together in one place

One of the most important elements of the project is the creation of a new local and intercity bus station right next to the railway station. To facilitate this, the existing shared rail–bus platform will be extended.
Passengers will be served by three covered waiting areas and an air-conditioned, enclosed platform shelter. To the north of the station, a depot with capacity for ten buses will also be built.

A Park & Ride car park is to be built on the site of the industrial railway line

Railway construction and demolition work will also be required to develop the site of the intermodal hub. As part of the project, the disused industrial track, approximately 252 metres long, will be removed, and the associated warehouse building will be demolished. The siding belonging to the industrial track will also be demolished, and a 34-metre-long through track will be built in its place; in addition, track realignment work will be carried out over a distance of approximately 70 metres.
A 54-space Park and Ride car park will be built on the freed-up site, including three accessible parking spaces.

A new junction is being built towards the 87 main road

The project goes well beyond the redevelopment of the immediate surroundings of the railway station. The surrounding road network is also being transformed. As part of this, Vasútállomás Street will be refurbished, and a new road link will be established between the intermodal hub and Main Road 87.
With the redevelopment of the junctions, two new traffic-light-controlled crossings and several new pedestrian crossings will also help ensure safe access to the railway and bus stations. Traffic-light control will also be installed at the bus exit and at the junction of the new road with Main Road 87. As part of the works, the urban section of Main Road 87 will also be resurfaced over a distance of nearly 400 metres.

A relief road is set to play a role in urban transport

As one of the project’s major road construction elements, a new relief road is being built between Pogányi Street and Cáki Road. The purpose of this 524-metre-long road is to reduce traffic congestion in the area comprising Szombathelyi Road, Rákóczi Ferenc Street, Vasútállomás Street and Alsó körút. Alongside the new road link, a 1.5-metre-wide pavement on one side will also be constructed. The project will also give a new purpose to a structure that was completed some time ago but has so far remained without any actual transport function: the bridge built over the Gyöngyös stream will be incorporated into the road network.

A new route to the station is also opening up for cyclists

Alongside road improvements, cycling routes are also being transformed. The Kőszegfalva cycle path will be connected to the station area, routed across Main Road 87, and then linked to the cycle bridge being built as part of the local authority’s project. The footpath and cycle path, which is nearly 391 metres long, will also cross the railway tracks via a separate underpass. A 3.6-metre-wide cycle and pedestrian crossing with a rubber-tiled surface will be constructed over the tracks.

Part of the station building is also being refurbished

The project will not leave the station building untouched either. A new office block will be built, and the passenger waiting area and toilet facilities will also be refurbished, covering a total area of around 183 square metres. A park will be created in front of the station building, with nearly 4,000 square metres of lawn laid and several thousand plants planted.
