312 km of ageing asphalt replaced by MKIF on nine expressways

MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt. From April to 1 August, it replaced 312 kilometres of ageing, damaged road surface with new asphalt, covering an area of 1.6 million square metres on nine expressways, the company announced on 2 August.

The M1, M3 and M7 motorways have seen the most pavement replacement, with around four-fifths of the work done so far on these three motorways. In addition, 36 bridges and flyovers have been renewed in the last four months.

According to MKIF, 2.5 million square metres of new asphalt will replace the old asphalt this year. The resurfacing, also known as levelling, will cover 538 kilometres of motorways and expressways over three years. Across the country, 200 bridges and flyovers will be rebuilt, including four major bridges:

• the Rába bridge,
• the Oslo Tisza Bridge,
• the Köröshegy viaduct
• and the Pentele Bridge.

Tens of billions of forints are planned to be spent this year on upgrading 67 motorways, they added. The MKIF Zrt. took over the operation, maintenance and development of 1,237 kilometres of Hungarian motorways in September 2022, the company said.
