Preparing for the M1 six-lane upgrade - test piling is underway

The MKIF will improve 80 kilometres of the motorway, with machines and technicians already in the field preparing the work.

Our newspaper was the first to report on the historic development of the M1 motorway: in a comprehensive interview at the end of October, Tamás Németh, CEO of MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt. CEO , our readers learned that preparatory work will begin this autumn, and the actual expansion will start on 1 September 2025 at the latest. MKIF Zrt.

The project involves resurfacing around 80 km of the M1 from the M0 motorway to the Concó rest area and widening the M1 to 2×3 lanes + ITS (the latter is short for Intelligent Stopping Lane).

Now, on the MKIF website it has been announced that preparatory work has begun and is already well underway. They have also published several photos and indicated that they will continue to report on the steps leading up to the actual implementation on this platform.

Preparing to upgrade bridges and flyovers

In a statement, MKIF reported that piling had started in several places near the track. This is necessary because the extension will require bridges and overpasses to be rebuilt or even completely rebuilt: in preparation for this, the soil bearing capacity of the areas concerned will have to be checked. For the time being, these works will not involve any traffic restrictions.

The company also confirmed that the actual works on the M1 motorway extension will start no later than 1 September 2025 and will be completed in 4 years. They also promised to provide further information on the preparations in the meantime.
