A new bike connection: from the city centre to the Danube bend

Significant progress has been made in cycling developments in northern Pest: official permission has been granted for the construction of a 3.5-kilometre cycle path between Megyeri Csárda and the Újpest railway bridge, according to the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK). rel="noopener"> Budapest Transport Centre (BKK).

The first step after obtaining the road construction permit will be the detailed design of the utilities and the preparation of the construction plans. The tender documentation is currently scheduled for completion by spring 2026, after which the preparation of the construction and the tendering process can start, subject to the necessary funding being secured.

In coordination with flood protection improvements

The planning was coordinated with the parallel flood protection development, ensuring that the two developments reinforce each other to serve the long-term interests of the district and cycling.

A bi-directional route at least 3.5 metres wide will improve cycling connections between the IV and XIII districts and make commuting from Dunakeszi safer. The development could also create an uninterrupted link between the Danube bend and the centre of Budapest.

Connected to existing sections

The development will serve to extend the existing EuroVelo sections in the capital and complete the missing Danube coastal routes, connecting to existing and planned network elements.

The missing 3.5 km section between the Megyeri tavern and the Újpest railway bridge will provide a direct link to the main urban network at the railway bridge and the existing cycle route between Budapest and Dunakeszi at the city border.
