The Bringasztráda programme continues – Planning for a new cycle path in the capital can begin

In September, our newspaper reported on new developments in cycling in Budapest, which could see new main cycle routes created on Váci-Üllői út and Nagykörút. The aim of the two investments, totalling 6 billion forints, is to offer a safe, attractive and green alternative for urban transport. At that time, the Budapest Transport Centre and the Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium Managing Authority signed two EU co-financing agreements to prepare for the implementation of the new cycle routes.

The story can now continue, as the winner of the tender for the design of the Grand Boulevard cycle path has been announced in the latest EU public procurement notices. According to this, Via Futura Mérnöki, Tanácsadó és Szolgáltató Kft. will be responsible for preparing the permit and implementation plans, among other things, at a cost of HUF 324.26 million. Also related to the same project, Via Futura Kft. won earlier the design work for two additional sections of Üllői út and Váci út.

Five sections, almost 4 kilometres of cycle paths and lanes will be created.

The aim of the Grand Boulevard cycle route is to improve the quality of public spaces and provide safe cycling for people of all ages and experience levels. It also promotes barrier-free pedestrian traffic along the Grand Boulevard, at the mouths of side streets and at pedestrian crossings. Within the framework of the cycle path programme, the design covers the entire cross-section of the affected road sections, with the exception of the tram infrastructure.

The designer's task is to create the

• Western Square – Király Street (Section 1),
• Király Street – Rákóczi Road (Section 2),
• Rákóczi Road – Corvin Quarter (Section 3),
• Corvin Quarter junction (section 4), and
• Corvin Quarter – Boráros Square (Section 5)

Planning the high-quality renovation of the entire cross-section between the sections, with the exception of electrical infrastructure, and creating a directional cycle lane or road separated by a built solution.

The length of the design section is approximately 3.7 kilometres, and the design area is approximately 62,250 m².

During the planning process, the following tasks and areas are covered for each stage:

• pavement surface and green strip, or equipment strip,
• cycle lane (which includes a multifunctional lane for parking, goods delivery, bicycle storage and traffic lanes), and
• street lighting.
