New momentum for Duna Group's giant project in Africa – photos

After several years of preparation, construction began this spring and is progressing significantly in the Luapula River area.

New financial resources have been made available, giving new impetus to road development and bridge construction in the heart of Africa, according to Duna Group's publication news item. A total of 184 kilometres of road development is underway in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Zambia, including road construction, modernisation and expansion, as well as the construction of a 345-metre border bridge. Duna Aszfalt Zrt. is participating as a technical and investment partner in one of the largest road construction projects on the continent; the bridge over the Luapula River was designed by Speciálterv Építőmérnöki Kft..

As a project company of Duna Group, GED Africa Limited (GED Africa) is working on a project of global economic significance, as the new transport corridor will significantly shorten the distance between the region's copper, cobalt and coltan mines and Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean coast.

Work continues to be carried out with Hungarian expertise

The announcement emphasises that, after more than five years of project development and preparatory work, construction began this spring using the company's own resources and is already showing significant progress.

However, new financial resources have now become available, giving the investment a new impetus. „Work will continue to be carried out in line with Hungarian expertise, with professional investment and supervision by Duna Aszfalt,” the statement reads.

According to plans, the entire infrastructure will be completed by the first quarter of 2027, creating a corridor between the two African countries. „Thanks to this project, Duna Group will become a global player in the infrastructure development market,” the report emphasises.

The names Buda and Pest are used to identify the two banks of the African river.

The work camps on both banks of the Luapula River, which forms the border, were named after the Hungarian capital: Camp Buda on the western side and Camp Pest on the eastern side.

What exactly is the GED Africa?

The road, referred to as GED Africa Route, will connect Kasomeno in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo with Mwenda in Zambia. The new road will reduce the round trip for commercial carriers from the Haut-Katanga mining area to the port of Dar es Salaam by approximately 500 kilometres.

Main components of the GED Africa project:

Construction and operation of 184 kilometres of road;
Construction and operation of a 345-metre-long border bridge;
construction of a one-stop border post with the associated infrastructure and border control and operational equipment, as well as their operation;
construction and operation of toll collection systems and related infrastructure;
and a focus on supporting local communities through the development and construction of social facilities.

GED Africa is a 25-year PPP concession project financed by private investment, involving three years of construction followed by 22 years of operation and maintenance of the completed infrastructure.
