71 km of twin pipelines built near Debrecen

On 16 October, a water utility development project that plays an important role in the lives of Hajdúnánás, Hajdúböszörmény and Balmazújváros was handed over. The Eastern Main Canal Surface Drinking Water Treatment Plant – Balmazújváros-Hajdúnánás-Hajdúböszörmény Transmission Line Construction investment was carried out by Mészáros és Mészáros Zrt. project, with EU KEHOP funding, at a cost of HUF 17 billion, by the Tiszamenti Regionális Vízművek Zrt. and Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium consortium investment.

We last reported on the development in June, when the work was expected to be completed by mid-November. At the project handover event held in Balmazújváros, it was summarised that the completed investment

• A 71-kilometre-long twin pipeline was built,
• A thousand cubic metre water tower was built in Hajdúnánás,
• and the supply of purified surface drinking water has significantly improved the water supply of three settlements - Balmazújváros, Hajdúböszörmény and Hajdúnánás.

Zsolt V. Németh, Minister of State for Water Management at the Ministry of Energy, said at the event that more than HUF 200 billion will be spent on water utility investments this year, including more than HUF 100 billion for the reconstruction of the network. Among other things, he also spoke about the need to increase the share of surface water in drinking water supply to five percent, a trend which is also reflected in the project that has just been completed.

István Tiba, Member of Parliament of the region, also emphasized the importance of increasing the security of drinking water supply and the protection of groundwater resources. He said,

The major investments in Debrecen are expected to lead to the establishment of businesses and an increase in population in the area, and the new investment will also help to meet the expected increase in water demand.
