New stormwater drainage to protect the great church in Tata

With an investment of more than 400 million forints, a new rainwater drainage system is being built in Tata, in the square of Pope John Paul II around the great church, the mayor of the city said. According to József Michl, 1,580 square metres of pavement will be renovated in a historic environment.

In and around the enclosure, green spaces called rain gardens are created that can retain and use rainfall.

The aim is to promote on-site desiccation

New gateways will be built in the development area, and the car parks will be paved with permeable paving to ensure that rainwater is drained locally. Street lighting in the square will also be renewed," said the mayor. The city council has won a HUF 405 million grant from the European Union under the Operational Programme for Spatial and Urban Development Plus.

In Tata, a new sewerage network was built over 1,755 metres in the last period, following a water management project costing more than HUF 1.1 billion.

The project has protected 96 family houses, 250 condominiums and a municipal kindergarten from the consequences of flooding.

The rain garden as an alternative

There are several areas in the city where stormwater drainage cannot be achieved by building conventional systems. Thus, in Nádas Street, in the autumn of 2023, 11 rain gardens were created as a natural alternative solution over an area of 500 square metres," added József Michl.
