Slovakia expands its nuclear power plant near Trenčín with a new block
Slovakia and the United States have agreed to build a new 1,200-megawatt nuclear power plant unit, according to World Nuclear News. According to the Slovak government's plans, the new unit will be commissioned around 2040–2041 in Bohunice, near Trenčín, and will contribute significantly to the country's long-term energy security. The document was signed by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and US Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
What is its significance?
Slovakia currently has five nuclear reactors generating approximately half of its electricity, with another under construction. This is a high proportion even by European standards, meaning that Slovakia's energy supply is already largely based on nuclear power. In addition, the Mochovce 4 unit is still under construction, which will further increase domestic capacity.
How much progress does this represent?
The planned new 1,200-megawatt unit at Bohunice is considered particularly large compared to the current Slovak nuclear power plant fleet. By way of comparison, the existing older units typically have a capacity of around 440-500 MW. Although no exact official figures have been released yet, a unit of this size could cover around 15-20 per cent of Slovakia's electricity demand on its own.
