Planning can begin – the M2 line could be extended to Cinkota, and the HÉV lines could be upgraded
A ceremony was held to mark the signing of the contract for the preparation of the planning permission and detailed design documents for the project to link the H8/H9 HÉV line and the M2 metro line.
The underground could run as far as Cinkota
This large-scale project, which involves extending the metro to Cinkota as well as connecting and modernising the HÉV and metro lines, could create new travel options for East Pest and the surrounding area.
In the public procurement process, the bid submitted by the design consortium led by FŐMTERV Mérnöki Tervező Zrt. was deemed the most favourable. The consortium comprises Utiber Közúti Beruházó Kft. and Ring Mérnökiroda Kft..
Preparations are underway for the comprehensive modernisation of the HÉV lines
The design covers the reconstruction of a 27-kilometre section of the H8 and H9 HÉV lines, as well as the electrification of a 2-kilometre section of the H9 line. The project also includes a 7.9-kilometre extension of the M2 metro line. The design work also involves the construction of several multi-level junctions and the preparation for an 80-metre-span railway bridge.
Plans are being drawn up to link the HÉV and the Underground
The tasks also include the design of associated facilities, utility relocations, Park & Ride car parks and transformer stations. As is well known, the Budapest General Assembly took a decision back in 2021 regarding the preparations for linking the M2 metro line with the Gödöllő HÉV line.
Plans are also in place to refurbish nine stations on the M2 line
As part of the project, the successful bidders will design the complete refurbishment and accessibility improvements for the nine stations and stops on the M2 metro line. The contract also includes an assessment of the potential uses for the Cinkota depot.
The Hungaroring may become available on a fixed-line network
The works include the physical connection of the H8 (Gödöllő) and H9 (Csömör) HÉV lines. The development objectives also include preparations for the construction of the Hungaroring station.
The aim of the project is to prepare for an accessible urban-suburban rapid transit system, which could significantly improve transport links for the eastern agglomeration settlements of Pest County, as well as for Budapest’s 10th, 14th and 16th districts.
Construction could begin in 2030
The design contract for the preparation of the investment was signed by Nándor Csepreghy, Parliamentary State Secretary for Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium (ÉKM), and Tibor Keszthelyi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of FŐMTERV Mérnöki Tervező Zrt., on behalf of the design consortium (FŐMTERV Zrt., UTIBER Kft., RING, Kft.). At the signing ceremony, Nándor Csepreghy highlighted that the design contract is worth 8.5 billion forints; according to the plans, the public procurement tender for construction can be launched in 2029, with construction set to begin in late 2029 or early 2030.
