Szeged to become one of Europe's leading industrial centres with the construction of the BYD factory, the city strengthens its position with a worthy investment package

With the construction of the BYD factory, Szeged will become one of Europe's thirty largest industrial centres, announced the Minister of Construction and Transport on Friday in Szeged. János Lázár has recently held talks with local mayors in several large cities (our articles on Debrecen here and here, and in Eger here ). Now, at a press conference following his meeting with László Botka, mayor of Szeged, he said,

The construction of the plant, which will be Hungary's largest car factory, is progressing much faster than expected.

The first vehicles will be completed in the second half of 2025, by which time the plant's motorway and road connections will have been built, the modernisation of the railway track and the construction of the railway terminal will begin, and the drinking water and waste water capacity needed for production will be continuously expanded.

János Lázár stated that a direct four-lane connection will be built between the M43 motorway and the plant. The section of Main Road 5 between the city and the motorway junction will be converted into a four-lane road. The implementation plans have been completed, the public procurement process has been completed, and the contractor for the HUF 5.5 billion development is expected to be Colas Magyarország Zrt. . In addition, main road 502 will be extended and expanded to two lanes in each direction, with planning for this development to be completed early next year.

What's more, BYD's giant factory is not the only investment of its kind in the area: the high-tech factory Rheinmetall is being built next door, and the Science Parkot in Szeged has been under construction since spring. rel="noopener">since spring, and the Science Parkot in Szeged is also being developed in the immediate vicinity (for more information on the latter, see photo report in the summer, the contractor Colas Út Zrt.–Délút Kft. consortium).

Regarding BYD's factory in Szeged, János Lázár's words in szeged365.hu on-site report, it has been revealed that preparations are also being made to provide the housing that will be needed as a result of the investments (in addition to the fact that water and wastewater treatment in Szeged is not at risk – as mentioned earlier in our article, developments in the area are ongoing). At the press event, it was stated about the investment that

Tens of thousands of people will work here, so transport improvements are planned for the city and the region: MÁV, Volán and Szeged will jointly develop the plans.

The Minister of Construction and Transport also said that the incoming workers will live in a container city during the construction of the BYD factory. He also said that the Szeged municipality will have to develop new residential areas: an agreement has been signed with Szeged to this end, as the city will be the developer and will work with the government on the project.

He added:

Hungarian-Serbian-Chinese cooperation will see the construction of the largest road, rail and freight crossing in the Schengen area in Röszke.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that the Röszke-Horgos motorway border crossing point would be transformed into Europe's most modern, fastest and most cultured border crossing point through a gigantic investment, and this was confirmed at the Szeged meeting. It was also mentioned at the press event that this mega-investment will be realised with a Chinese loan, the project is worth approximately HUF 100 billion.
