An office block on Deák Square is being converted into a hotel, with a restaurant, a roof terrace and an outdoor fitness area on the top floor.

REALIS WAM Alapkezelő Zrt. is developing the 177-room Canopy by Hilton hotel on Deák Ferenc Square in Budapest, according to a statement from the property development company. The lifestyle hotel will pay tribute to the world-renowned Bauhaus architect Marcell Breuer, and will be operated by a subsidiary of Continental Group.

The project involves converting an office block into a hotel based on the plans Finta Stúdió and MádiLáncos Studio. According to the announcement, the building has exceptional potential for use as a hotel.

In addition to the 177 rooms, there will be 70 underground parking spaces; the city centre location is complemented by magnificent views and excellent transport links, as well as being within walking distance of St Stephen’s Basilica and other attractions.

On the top floor of the building, a 240 m² area will be developed to house a restaurant, a roof terrace, a rooftop bar and an outdoor fitness area – offering views of the Basilica, Andrássy Avenue, Deák Square and Gellért Hill.

Breuer’s work continues to influence design around the world today

The text also reveals that the hotel’s interior design concept pays homage to the life’s work of Marcell Breuer, one of the most influential figures in Bauhaus, Brutalist and Modernist architecture, who was born in Pécs.

They add that Breuer’s work continues to influence design worldwide: his architecture continues to inspire contemporary design, whilst many of his iconic pieces of furniture – such as the Cesca chair and the Wassily armchair – are still in production today and widely recognised. One of his best-known buildings is located in New York; the former Whitney Museum now houses the headquarters of Sotheby’s auction house.

According to the announcement, REALIS WAM Alapkezelő Zrt. is a subsidiary of the Hungarian family-owned REALIS Group group, which was founded in 2013. The project in question is a fine example of REALIS WAM’s approach to development. „Our goal and philosophy is to develop high-quality, distinctive buildings in prime locations which, going beyond financial value creation, shape our built environment in a defining and sustainable way and also enhance its aesthetic, architectural and cultural standards” – the report quotes Dr Mihály Schrancz, the company’s founder, owner and CEO. „In this hotel development, the legacy of Marcell Breuer and the art that inspired him embody this mission of ours,” he emphasised.
