A response to the energy revolution: ABB expands its manufacturing capacity in Kecskemét with the 30%

ABB
There is a huge and growing demand for medium-voltage power grid components. One of the world’s largest manufacturers is striving to meet this demand.

One of the world’s leading energy technology manufacturers has had a Hungarian subsidiary since 1991. ABB is a company with a history stretching back more than 140 years, employing around 110,000 people worldwide; its products can be found everywhere in the world where electricity is used – both on Earth and in space. As part of a global development package, they are now significantly upgrading their plant in Kecskemét.

An unprecedented expansion is on the way

As the company emphasises in the statement it sent to us: according to forecasts by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the share of electricity within total energy consumption is set to rise, which in turn creates significant demand for grid capacity and grid modernisation.

According to IEA estimates, utility companies worldwide will need to refurbish or build more than 80 million kilometres of network by 2040 – equivalent to rebuilding the entire existing global network.

This is why ABB has launched a $200 million development programme spanning several European countries, aimed at expanding manufacturing capabilities in the areas of critical medium-voltage cable accessories, grid infrastructure and automation technologies.

Production in Kecskemét could rise by a third

ABB is expanding its production capacity for medium-voltage cable assemblies with an investment of over 5 billion forints (more than 15 million US dollars) at its ABB Installation Equipment Kft. manufacturing facility in Kecskemét. This will significantly strengthen the supply of network infrastructure.

The investment represents an increase in current production of the 30% model and will also accelerate the transition to state-of-the-art underground cabling solutions used in electricity distribution.

The expansion of the supplier portfolio is vital for utility companies and renewable energy customers who are modernising their electricity infrastructure across Europe. The expansion also covers the production of highly popular cable assembly solutions, which enhance the reliability and safety of electrical installations.
