The ALTEO project continues to make progress with energy storage investments aimed at balancing the volatility of renewable energy generation. A new 20 MWh storage facility has been commissioned in Győr.

At the end of February we reported that ALTEO had handed over one of the country’s largest energy storage facilities in Győr. The facility, with a storage capacity of 100 MWh, has increased Hungary’s electricity storage capacity by 20%.

The sixth 20 MWh electricity storage facility, designated ALTEO, has now also been commissioned in the county town in Transdanubia. A facility of this size would be capable of supplying electricity to as many as 2,900 homes for a full day.

As stated in their announcement to MTI: the new unit will be connected to the electricity grid alongside the company’s existing fleet of gas-fired power stations, meaning that this investment will also increase the utilisation of the existing grid connection capacity.

In addition to district heating, storage capacity is being expanded

The subsidiary of ALTEO provides district heating in six towns; thanks to its state-of-the-art equipment, it also supplies electricity and helps to maintain the stability of the electricity system by integrating its power stations into system-wide services. The newly commissioned energy storage facility has been built adjacent to the subsidiary’s existing and operational hall, which houses five gas engines, meaning that all the necessary infrastructure and grid connection facilities are already in place for its operation.

„With the commissioning of the new energy storage facility, the ALTEO Control Centre, which is responsible for aggregation, now has a total of 90 MW of owned storage capacity connected to it. Energy storage facilities play a key role in the efficient integration of renewable, weather-dependent electricity generation, whilst strengthening domestic security of supply. ”Thanks to their rapid response times, measured in seconds, they enable the ALTEO Group’s diversified portfolio to integrate flexibly and efficiently into the European electricity system’s control platform, which Hungary is expected to join as early as this autumn,” – said Szilárd Korhetz, Head of Business Development at ALTEO Nyrt, at the handover ceremony.
