According to a statement from MTI, Károly Mátrai, CEO of the MVM Group, pointed out that the investment forms part of MVM’s long-term development strategy, which aims to increase the flexibility of the electricity system, integrate renewable energy sources more efficiently into the grid and strengthen security of supply.

 

 

A hybrid energy centre is being built

He added that Tiszaújváros is set to become one of the key centres of the Hungarian energy sector in the future. The energy storage facility that has just been handed over was built on the same site where the company is also constructing a combined-cycle gas turbine power station (CCGT) with a capacity of nearly 1,000 megawatts. Together, these two projects will form a hybrid energy generation and storage centre that is set to play a significant role in the operation of the domestic electricity system and in strengthening security of supply.

The Chief Executive Officer stated that the MVM Group had significantly increased its energy storage capacity over the past year and a half. Whilst it had a battery storage capacity of 0.5 megawatts at the end of 2024, it currently operates an energy storage portfolio with a capacity of 124 megawatts and a storage capacity of 215 megawatt-hours. By the end of the year, storage capacity is expected to rise to 141 megawatts following the commissioning of a new facility in Ajka.

The aim of MVM is to build approximately 500 megawatts of energy storage capacity by 2030; to this end, it is preparing new developments both in Hungary and at its subsidiary in the Czech Republic.

 

We need batteries for the green transition

According to the MTI report, Csaba Kiss, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Production, emphasised that energy storage is playing an increasingly crucial role in maintaining the flexibility and operational reliability of the electricity system. As he explained, the Tiszaújváros system consists of 180 battery units and is closely linked to the renewable energy developments outlined in MVM, as well as to the construction of the new gas-fired power station.

The investment fits well with the MVM Csoport green transition strategy, which involves the parallel development of state-of-the-art, flexible electricity generation capacity, renewable energy sources and the energy storage systems that support their operation.

An energy storage capacity of 62 megawatt-hours has been established in Tiszaújváros, which is equivalent to the amount of energy needed to charge approximately one million laptops or 4.5 million modern mobile phones – as the Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Production pointed out. He explained that, with this latest development, the MVM production division will soon have an energy storage portfolio with a capacity of around 100 megawatts and 155 megawatt-hours.
