A book on the life and work of Dr Imre Kerekes has been published.

Nyíregyháza, Mátészalka. High professional competence, rational decision-making ability, empathy, accuracy, consistency, fairness. We could go on listing the qualities that a leader should possess. Someone who was usually the first to arrive and the last to leave the workplace. Someone who knew every ins and outs of the profession and who was able to evaluate and recognise work of the right quality. Dr Imre Kerekes was such a person.

Two retired railway civil engineers with higher education degrees in railway engineering and librarianship embarked on a unique venture a year ago. At the request of their family and the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Chamber of Engineers, they presented the public with a book that is commendable from the point of view of technical and local history preservation, covering the life and work of engineer Dr. Imre Kerekes. Gábor Képes and Menyhért Szabó did a tremendous amount of work researching documents and gathering personal experiences from former colleagues in order to present the life of an engineer who spent decades successfully serving the Hungarian construction industry>authentically to the reader. Their work was made easier and the publication even more authentic by the fact that they were friends with the book's namesake.

The work entitled Magyar Építőipar Szolgálatában (In the Service of Magyar Építőipar) was presented twice in recent days. First, on the second Monday of May, in Nyíregyháza, in the chamber hall of the Móricz Zsigmond County and City Library, the authors presented the book to former colleagues, acquaintances and friends, explaining how it came about. During the lively discussion, participants supplemented the portrait of the book's namesake with their personal experiences.

Did you know that Dr. Imre Kerekes was the founding president of the County Chamber of Engineers? In memory of this, the Dr. Imre Kerekes Award was established last year, which was first awarded to one of the authors, Gábor Képes, a certified civil engineer. Dr. Imre Kerekes had many ties to KE-VÍZ 21. zRt., which helped in the completion of the book. He was involved in numerous projects in various positions, such as office manager, subcontractor, commissioned chief construction manager, and technical inspector. We could list these projects at length, but among the most important are the Szamos-Kraszna reservoir, the railway station buildings in Záhony and Nyíregyháza, and perhaps most iconic of all, the reconstruction and renovation of the Móricz Zsigmond Theatre in Nyíregyháza, which presented a major professional challenge.

Dr Imre Kerekes had a significant influence on the current senior managers of the KE-VÍZ structural engineering office. Office manager Gergely Buti, chief production engineer Norbert Borbély and technology group leader Zoltán Kovács all honed their skills under Dr. Imre Kerekes's guidance during numerous joint projects. They were able to experience the extensive professional knowledge, dedication, precision and commitment to quality of the book's namesake.

Following the presentation in Nyíregyháza, the authors presented the book to a similarly interested audience at the library in Mátészalka the next day. The book is also available in e-book format. Those interested were able to meet Dr. Imre Kerekes" daughter, Dr. Nóra Kerekes, who lives in Sweden and who contributed greatly to the creation of the book, at both presentations.
