Construction projects worth approximately 34 billion forints are set to begin in Transylvania.

Knauf is building a plasterboard factory in Bánffyhunyad, in the centre of Kalotaszeg, according to information provided by the local council to profit.ro. Adrian Garofeanu, CEO of Knauf Insulation, met with city hall representatives and Viorel Baltaretu, State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy in Bucharest, at the future factory site on Thursday, where he presented a model of the factory.

The estimated value of the investment is EUR 88 million (HUF 33.641 billion). „This is one of the most important investments in Cluj County, creating 75 direct jobs and a further 30 indirect jobs. It will have a significant economic impact on the entire region, especially on the community of Bánffyhunyad,” said Mayor Mircea Morosan. He added that work will begin in the spring of 2026, with production scheduled to start in 2028.

The Knauf has already been active in the region.

The plant will process mineral gypsum mined on the outskirts of the nearby village of Jegenye (Leghia) in Kalotaszeg. The German company already has a factory in the region, in Egeres. Production began this year at Knauf's other Romanian factory, in Dicsőszentmárton, which produces mineral wool. The plant in Maros County was built with an investment of EUR 140 million (HUF 53.520 billion).

The German parent company has two subsidiaries in Romania, Knauf Insulation and Knauf Gips, which employed a total of approximately 210 people last year. Knauf Gips achieved a pre-tax profit of 17.486 million lei (1.313 billion Hungarian forints) on sales of 244.755 million lei (18.388 billion Hungarian forints) in 2024, while Knauf Insulation closed the year with sales of 124.891 million lei (9.383 billion forints) and a loss of 83.579 million lei (6.279 billion forints).
