Szombathely railway station undergoes partial track renewal

The long-awaited reconstruction of the track network in the northern area of Szombathely railway station will begin at the end of September, according to an announcement by social media page.

The railway track will be upgraded, new safety equipment will be installed and the overhead line system will be replaced on some sections.

During the reconstruction works, between 29 September and 2 November, there will be no train service between Szombathely and Vép, passengers will be transported by substitute buses.

Trains can speed up

According to earlier information from nyugat.hu, speed restrictions were introduced in the northern part of the station in the summer. According to GYSEV, this was necessary due to the condition of the track, so that trains could pass through the section in complete safety. The operator was already planning a partial renovation of the track network at that time, the first phase of which is set to begin soon. Once completed, the speed restrictions will also be lifted.

In the framework of the railway upgrade between Szombathely and Kőszeg in the summer of 2022, 17 kilometres of the GYSEV Zrt. line were renewed, allowing trains to run at 80 km/h. The project also included the renewal of the crossings, the reconstruction of the track network and the modification of the safety equipment at Kőszeg station.
