The Budapest-Hegyeshalom railway line reconstruction enters a new phase

The reconstruction of the main line in Győr has entered a new phase. From 27 October, the works will affect both tracks simultaneously, therefore train services will be completely suspended for three weeks, until 17 November, between Biatorbágy–Szárliget and Tatabánya, and nightly between Szárliget and Budaörs, according to information provided by MÁV Zrt on its website . Passengers will only be transported by replacement buses on these sections.

As reported by our newspaper reported, renovation of the section between Biatorbágy and Szárliget on the Budapest–Tatabánya–Győr–Hegyeshalom main line began on 18 September.

Track reconstruction to be carried out in three phases

The background to this is that the scheduled, regularly performed so-called pull-out force tests on the 29-kilometre section of the line between Biatorbágy and Szárliget have established that the previously identified deterioration rate has accelerated due to this year's heavy rainfall and the heat of the past weeks, making it necessary to reschedule the renovation works originally planned for the first quarter of next year and to carry them out as early as possible.

According to the information, in addition to the replacement of rails and concrete sleepers, the ballast will be replaced, track regulation will be carried out, and the substructure (railway embankment, notch) will be restored for more than one and a half kilometres, and six overhead line support poles will be replaced. The works, which will be carried out in three phases over a period of around three months, will involve laying 950 120-metre long rails, replacing 96,000 reinforced concrete sleepers and installing more than 100,000 tonnes of ballast.

The construction will be carried out by MÁV FKG, a subsidiary of MÁV Zrt., with a maintenance budget of HUF 32.5 billion.

In addition, the railway company will provide information through displays, posters and loudspeakers at stations, stops, on trains and through sales channels.

Also, due to track renewal on the Győr main line between Biatorbágy and Szárliget, freight trains will be diverted to the Székesfehérvár-Komárom line from today, so passenger trains will temporarily not run there, as the diverted freight traffic would have made the passenger timetable uncertain and unpredictable. An extra journey time of 20-25 minutes should be expected, as the stops for replacement buses are in most cases further away from stations and stops.

Freight trains on the Székesfehérvár-Komárom line will cause more noise than usual, which will be audible even at night in the areas and settlements along the railway line, according to the railway company's website.
