The Debrecen-Füzesabony railway line renewal brings a step forward in terms of quantity

Work on the overhead line network at Tócóvölgy station also started in mid-April and will continue until mid-May, when the work will continue with the demolition and construction of the tracks. The rebuilding of the open line sections is expected to continue in several phases until the timetable change in December.

Environmental restoration is also underway

According to the information, for reasons beyond the control of the MÁV group, this project has to be postponed by a more significant amount of approximately 2.5 months, due to the addition of a previously unknown environmental damage remediation project, which dates back decades.

During the demolition and construction of the tracks in Balmazújváros, a previously unknown soil contamination was discovered. It is of utmost importance that the contamination is removed in a professional manner and in compliance with all environmental aspects, therefore soil and groundwater sampling has already been carried out and after laboratory tests the excavation and removal of the contaminated soil and the subsequent backfilling and compaction of the uncontaminated soil can start soon

This will mean that the construction of the tracks can resume after the mitigation, and therefore the construction period will be extended, so the original track-laying schedule of mid-June is expected to last until the end of August, they added. At Balmazújváros station, trains to and from Füzesabony are expected to run with partial restrictions from September. However, this will also depend on the recultivation of the said soil contamination.

Work around Hortobágy is nearing completion

In connection with the renewal, MÁV will carry out maintenance work on the 16-kilometre section between Hortobágy and Ohat-Pusztakócs stations using its own resources for three months until mid-June. During the maintenance work, about 170 longitudinal rails were replaced, concrete sleepers were repaired and large-scale track control was carried out.
