In addition to track renewal, the project would also involve structures, safety equipment and the overhead line system.

As we recently we wrote MÁV Track Operation Zrt. is seeking applicants for the renovation of certain sections of the 100 Budapest – Szolnok – Debrecen – Nyíregyháza – Záhony railway line.

It is one of the country's most important lines in terms of suburban and long-distance passenger traffic, with significant freight traffic as well. The last comprehensive renovation took place in the early 1970s, and as a result, the entire infrastructure is outdated and can only be travelled at speeds of 40-60 km/h.

According to information published in the EU public procurement notice information, following on from the Városliget junction – Kőbánya-Teher section, they are now looking for a contractor to renovate the Kőbánya teher – Kőbánya-Kispest section.

The task is to renovate an approximately 4-kilometre-long, electrified, double-track railway line. The permitted speed on this section of the line is 80 km/h. The maximum permissible axle load is 210 kN.

Main tasks to be performed

The investment involves complex railway construction tasks, ranging from the physical renewal of the track, through engineering structures and safety equipment, to the modernisation of the overhead line system.

In the railway track area, the contractor will be responsible for renovating the entire substructure and superstructure. As part of this, several kilometres of continuous welded rail will be laid, with substructure repairs and ballast replacement. The works will involve the demolition and replacement of existing turnouts and track connections, as well as the modernisation of the drainage system and road and pedestrian crossings. The preparation of the necessary technological plans is also part of the task.

In the case of engineering structures, the works include the renovation of structures carrying railway loads located along the line section. This concerns both steel and reinforced concrete structures, the modernisation of which is essential for the long-term operational safety of the track. The contractor is also responsible for preparing the technical plans for the interventions.

As part of the safety equipment works, the mechanical dependencies and circuits affecting the Kőbánya-Teher station centres will be converted. In addition, the project also includes the dismantling of outdoor equipment related to the elimination of turnouts, the dismantling of traction cables and the installation of new cable structures. The tasks related to telecommunications systems include the protection of cables and their routing through structures.

High-voltage works focus on the comprehensive renewal of the overhead line system. This involves, among other things, replacing weight tensioners and insulators, replacing overhead line chains and protecting poles against corrosion. As part of the project, the overhead line sectioning devices at Kőbánya-Teher station will be electrically powered and connected to the FET system.

Deadline for receipt of tenders: 17 March 2026.
