Bound track
The new underpass in Dunaharaszti opened with double the capacity on line BuBe.
On the morning of 10 February, the Némedi út underpass in Dunaharaszti was opened to traffic. It was renovated as part of the development of the Budapest–Belgrade railway line. The investment was carried out by Colas Út Zrt. on behalf of CTEC Kft..
In place of the previous, narrow bottleneck, a modern underpass with twice the capacity now serves motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
It has grown not only in width but also in length.
Our newspaper in December reported in detail on the development, during which the previous seven-metre opening was expanded to nearly double its size, to 13–13.8 metres. The new underpass has a clearance height of over 4.7 metres, allowing trucks and buses to pass through without obstruction. A separate pedestrian and cycle crossing has been created alongside the two lanes of traffic.
The new structure has grown not only in width but also in length: a U-shaped, monolithic reinforced concrete frame structure has been built between Gyárköz and Vasút streets, forming a closed, expansion joint unit with the superstructure.
A temporary bridge ensured continuous traffic flow
One of the greatest engineering challenges of the project was to maintain continuous rail traffic. The experts at Colas Út Zrt. built a temporary steel bridge – a provisional structure – which was February 2024 with a 450-tonne mobile crane. This solution ensured the smooth operation of trains during the construction period for several months, until the superstructure of the new bridge was completed.
As part of the investment, a new storm water reservoir was also built, which collects rainwater from the surrounding streets.
It delays the discharge of rainwater into the municipal sewer system, thereby reducing the risk of flash floods and relieving the burden on the drainage system.
Testing of the BuBe railway line will also commence today.
The significance of Tuesday's handover is further enhanced by the announcement by MÁV that it will commence high-speed testing on the BuBe railway line. These may involve barrier closures of up to 20 minutes between 10 and 26 February, placing a significant burden on the level crossings in Dunaharaszti.
