More than 80 waste collection yards to be built across the country in the next decade

The MOHU Mol Hulladékgazdálkodási Zrt. has already started preparing its development programme this summer. Since then, it has also been announced that the number of waste yards will be increased from the current almost 280 to 362 (83 centres in total) over the next decade.

Thus, all municipalities with more than 10,000 inhabitants will have a waste yard, with longer opening hours than before.

The new centre will serve Esztergom from May

On the morning of 15 November, the foundation stone for the first new facility was laid in Esztergom. According to the company's announcement, MOHU will implement a significant construction programme over the next 10 years to develop domestic waste collection sites. The Esztergom waste collection centre will be built by Strabag-csoport, and the modern facility is expected to be open to the residents of the city and the surrounding area from May 2024.

After Esztergom, similar facilities will be built in Karcag, Tiszaföldvár and Veresegyháza in the national development series, after which the preparation and construction of about 10 waste yards per year will be completed.

The waste collection centre in Esztergom will include a 4,000 square metre concrete plaza, several social buildings, a bridge weighbridge and containers in a modern, state-of-the-art environment.

The new yards will be open for 48 hours a week, including one weekend day, and will offer a much wider range of waste drop-off options. A transparent IT system will monitor the quantity and delivery of waste.

Construction work now underway will make life easier for 60,000 people

The event was also attended by Mayor Ádám Hernádi, Zsolt Pethő, CEO of MOHU, László Szendrődi Márton, representing the company, and Gábor Erős, Member of Parliament.

Ádám Hernádi said,

There are currently no waste collection yards in the city and surrounding municipalities, and Esztergom has a population of nearly 30,000. The new facility will also be accessible to the surrounding municipalities, meaning that more than 60,000 people will be able to use it, including the city.

Zsolt Pethő added that in the next 10 years MOHU will spend more than HUF 10 billion on the development of waste yards, with the company's goal of increasing the recycling of municipal waste to 65 percent.

How will the new yards be more advanced than the old ones?

The company's statement also revealed that in the previous fragmented system, the type of waste that could be deposited was very fragmented and varied from one yard to another. There were yards where metal could not be disposed of, yards where textiles could not be disposed of, and almost all yards decided for themselves what they would accept. This system made it very difficult to drop off and track waste. The system developed by MOHU will be much simpler to operate, as the new yards will all be able to accept the same types of waste.

In the design of yards, it will also be important to ensure that different types of waste are stored separately, do not mix, and that the materials deposited are collected in a measurable way. The yard will have to register the amount and the route of the waste in the so-called Waste tracking system.

To ensure accurate data, each yard will also have a bridge scale and a leaf scale. They say this is one of the most important innovations, and will make the type, amount and route of waste collected transparent at national level. This data is key to ensuring that recycling is efficient.

In preparing the design plans, MOHU has made it a priority to ensure that the new courtyards are modern, residential-friendly, with easy access, parking and accessibility, depending on the site conditions.
