The Stellantis plant in Szentgotthárd secures its future as an electric car manufacturer with a major investment

Stellantis Group, one of the world's largest automotive groups, headquartered in the Netherlands and with a pan-European background, is placing a key element of its electromobility strategy in Hungary, it was announced on 12 February in Budapest. The 45 billion forint investment will secure the future of the Opel plant in Szentgotthárd, said Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó.

The new investment by the group of sixteen brands, including Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Citroen, Opel and Peugeot, will further strengthen Hungary's role in the electric car transition.

The Stellantis will bring a key element of Opel's electromobility strategy to the Szentgotthárd plant, where production of electric motors can now begin alongside conventional powertrains, and the related research, development and testing activities will also move there. According to Stellantis, EDM (electric drive module) production is expected to start in Szentgotthárd at the end of 2026.

Operates with Hungarian management

"This investment, partly in production and partly in research and development, represents a total value of HUF 45 billion. It will create 110 new jobs, and the government will provide HUF 10 billion in non-refundable support for this," said Péter Szijjártó.

The Minister stressed that this investment is particularly valuable because it is the only one of the five, or soon to be six, car manufacturers in the country that is currently operating under Hungarian management.
