One of the most famous Hungarian monuments has changed its old robe - the restoration of the Jaki church is complete

Now the diocese is preparing to open a visitor centre.

The restoration of the interior and exterior of the Church of St. George in Ják, Vas County, has been completed, and the next step could be the construction of a visitor centre with ready-made construction plans, said architect Márton Sarkadi Sarkadi, project manager of the Diocese of Szombathely, on 12 April.

 

 

Márton Sarkadi said that the restoration of the interior of the church was completed in 2022, and since then the restoration of the church façade has been completed, the most important of which was the restoration of the well-known western gate of the Jaki church, he said, adding that the churchyard has been renewed, including the walkways and the modernization of the lighting.

The architect also pointed out that the restoration of the 13th-century chapel of St. James was also completed. It served as a church for the village in the Middle Ages, as the church of St. George, built as a monastery, could not have fulfilled this function at that time.

 

 

The next step is to create a vision centre

The next step will be the construction of a visitor centre and exhibition space connected to the church in Jaki, in preparation for which the original apostles' statues that adorned the gate of the abbey church were removed from the Savaria Museum on Friday. Three of them will be temporarily on display in a tourist pavilion in Ják, in a building attached to the church, while the rest will be stored in the Szombathely Diocese's artifact warehouse until the visitor centre is built.

According to Márton Sarkadi, the aim of this step is to draw attention to the fact that not only the Romanesque church building in Jáka is a sight to see, but also the archaeological finds and other objects that illustrate its history and shed light on its archaeological and art historical significance.

 

Márton Sarkadi said that since 2018, the Diocese of Szombathely has received more than HUF 2 billion in government funding for the restoration of the Ják church, while the creation of the visitor centre - which will be based on the abbey buildings, but also include a new large exhibition space - will require more than HUF 1 billion.

 

 

Originally consecrated in 1256, the Romanesque-style church has been ravaged by armies, fire and natural disasters over the centuries. The last major restoration work was carried out more than a century ago to the designs of Frigyes Schulek, and the church has preserved its original Romanesque form and style, and remains intact.

The renewed abbey church is scheduled to be blessed on Sunday, 21 April, by János Székely, the county bishop, with the President of the Republic expected to attend.
