Twenty apartments will be built in the three buildings, while the ground floor will be used for community spaces and service units to meet demand.

A social services centre and apartment blocks for the elderly are being built in Mórahalom. The EU-funded project was officially inaugurated on 6 October in the small town in the Csongrád-Csanád county.

The new centre will bring together social care services currently provided on several sites in a single location. It will also create a new form of care in the city, as the area will also see the construction of apartment blocks for pensioners with the participation of a private investor.

The contractor and the investor of the apartment buildings of the social service centre, which will be completed by next June, with a net construction cost of HUF 600 million, is the Szeged-based company Domi 87 Kft.. The land for the centre was provided by the municipality, the necessary infrastructure was built by the city, and the equipment needed for the operation was also purchased from its own resources.

In apartments, older people can retain their independence

Local mayor Zoltán Nógrádi said at Sunday's event that the condominiums are open to elderly people living in garden houses or on farms who are able to live independently with assistance. The apartments will allow the elderly to maintain their independence while benefiting from the day care services available at the centre. After the death of the residents, the municipality will buy the property from their heirs and sell it to a buyer who is suitable for the function of the apartment building," said Zoltán Nógrádi.

The mayor recalled that the care of the elderly was launched in Mórahalom 35 years ago, at the same time as the town became a town. At first, day care and home help were available to the elderly in the town and the region, and over the years this was extended to include a neglect service and a home signalling system.

Construction of the apartment buildings is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026

At the press event, László Domonkos, managing owner of the contractor, said that the service centre started construction in March with landscaping, and the building is currently 20 percent complete. The ground floor of the 955-square-metre building will house the community spaces, while the offices will be located on the upper floor and the attic will house the warehouses and mechanical equipment.

In a few days, the construction of the first phase of retirement homes will also begin in the area. Twenty apartments will be constructed in three almost identical buildings with a useful floor area of 1,000 square metres, while the ground floor will house community spaces and service units to meet the needs of the community, the manager said. He added that construction of the apartment blocks is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.
