Körber, a manufacturer of machinery for the pharmaceutical and paper industries, has made a major upgrade.

Körber Hungária Gépgyártó Kft. (Körber) made improvements worth more than HUF 3.6 billion at its Pécs plant in 2024, the German-owned company, which manufactures production lines and components, said on Thursday.

Körber - formerly Hauni - which used to mainly manufacture and supply parts for tobacco machinery, but now serves the pharmaceutical industry and paper industry to a greater extent, has installed a solar power plant with a surface area of more than 11,000 square metres on the roof of its factory building, acquired high-tech metalworking machinery and switched to more efficient and environmentally friendly powder coating technology this year.

Open to green solutions

The developments were justified by the technological sensitivity and the constant need for innovation in the custom machinery sector, while the strategic objective was also to reduce the company's environmental footprint.

Quoting Buda Zalay's CEO, it was explained that during 2024, three major projects and nearly a dozen smaller ones were implemented at the factory to increase competitiveness and make operations more sustainable.

The use of solar collectors, heat pumps and more energy-efficient technologies have significantly reduced the site's gas consumption. The company's chipping plant is cooled in the hot season and heated in the cold season by a heat pump cooling and heating system.

The new system could cover the energy needs of 500 houses

The company now generates between a third and a quarter of its annual electricity needs from solar panels. The system of 4,570 panels could meet the electricity needs of approximately 500 average family homes.

The development of the powder coating plant and the new simultaneous five-axis CNC machining centre represent a technological leap forward, enabling the factory to machine complex parts in a wider range of sizes

- said the CEO.
