The widening of the Szeged approach section of Main Road No. 5 to four lanes is in its final stages
The widening of the approach section of Main Road 5 to Szeged will be completed by the end of August: from the M43 motorway exit to Szeged, meaning traffic will be able to travel on a 2×2-lane carriageway throughout – announced Dávid Vitézy, Minister for Transport and Investment, in a post on his Facebook page. Commissioned by the ministry and its predecessor, the Colas project carried out capacity expansion works over a 2.2-kilometre stretch at a cost of 5.3 billion forints.
They are putting the finishing touches to it
Our website has also provided a detailed report on the construction work. The section of Main Road 5 between the M43 motorway and the ELI-ALPS road has been widened to two lanes in each direction; with the construction of new roundabouts, cycle paths and junctions, the industrial park will become easily accessible. The project plays a key role in serving the region’s industrial facilities – such as the BYD factory.
In addition to the capacity expansion of the approach section of Road 5, a new roundabout, one bus bay in each direction and an axle load weighing bay have been built, and the entire section has been fitted with new street lighting. A new cycle path has also been constructed between Road 502 and the M43 motorway, which runs under the motorway. All that remains are minor rectifications and the technical handover; the final 2×2-lane traffic configuration will come into effect during the day on 28 August.
The works affected both the exterior and interior areas
The construction work is being carried out by experts from Colas Út Zrt. are working on the construction, based on plans drawn up by Út-Teszt Kft., which were updated by the subcontractor Makadám 2000 Kft. as a subcontractor. Road construction work took place both within and outside built-up areas. The project also included the construction of a 1.6 km-long cycle path. During the widening of Main Road 5, the entire road structure of the old road was demolished, whilst at the existing roundabouts the kerbs, paving stones and asphalt surface were renewed. A total of 30,000 m³ of cutting and 5,600 m³ of filling were carried out during the works.
The new lanes were built in stages
The works were carried out in four main phases – setting up traffic diversions, demolishing the old road surface, earthworks, and constructing the new road structure. As each new section was completed, traffic was diverted onto it and work continued on the next phase.
The layer structure of the renovated and widened main road is as follows: on top of a 50 cm layer of stabilised earth, repair and frost-protection layers, each 25 cm thick, were laid. The asphalt was laid in three layers, totalling 23 cm in thickness, on top of a 20 cm Ckt-4 base course. The latter was supplied by the Colas Út Zrt. mixing plant in Kiskunfélegyháza and the Délút Kft. in Algyő. The milled asphalt and earthworks material were recycled during the project.
A new exit has been built from the M43 motorway towards Szeged
The project includes the reconstruction of the M43 motorway junction. With the construction of a new direct exit ramp, traffic heading towards Szeged will be able to leave the motorway without having to go round the roundabout. A new three-arm roundabout has been built on Main Road 5 to serve traffic in the industrial areas. At the Nagybani Market, a new, approximately 150-metre-long, two-lane access road will assist road users in the area. Another element of the project was the construction of the first 70-metre section of the fourth arm of the roundabout at the junction of Roads 5 and 502.
