Colas and Délút completed an important new road in Szeged

A new 3.9-kilometre road linking Szeged's largest residential area and the ELI-ALPS laser research centre was completed, with the EU-funded HUF 4.2 billion investment being handed over on Wednesday. The contractor was a consortium of Colas Út Építőipari Zrt. and Délút Építő és Bányászati Kft..

According to a press release distributed on the spot, the investment has created the necessary infrastructure for all modes of transport.

The development included the upgrading and widening of 2,840 metres of existing roads, three new roundabouts and 4,420 metres of cycle paths. Ten new bus stops were built and three existing ones were renovated, so that from 1 September the 78 and 78A buses will use the new road. 6.7 kilometres of storm drains have been built, two storm water reservoirs have been constructed and street lighting has been completed.

The project will include the creation of new green spaces, which will start as soon as the heatwave is over: thousands of square metres will be grassed, 160 trees and 1,100 shrubs will be planted.

Sándor Nagy (Momentum), deputy mayor for urban development, said at the inauguration ceremony that the road is the largest municipal investment in Szeged in the current EU budget cycle, of which 1.1 kilometres is a completely new section. It connects the largest residential area of Szeged, Vérto, with the access section of the main road 5. This area is the largest industrial and commercial zone in the city, employing 3.5-4 thousand people. The research centre ELI-ALPS is located in the centre of the area, and a science and innovation park is being developed next to it.

The construction of a new road leading to the laser research centre is the final element of the municipality's infrastructure development programme for the north-western part of Szeged, which will encourage companies operating there to invest and new businesses to set up. The upgrading of the Kollégiumi út was recently completed with HUF 832 million, while almost HUF 1.3 billion was spent on improving economic roads in the city centre.
