Despite the extreme cold, nearly a thousand riders took part in the KÉSZ Group Balatonfondo cycling festival on the shores of Lake Balaton. The top of the podium was taken by 15-year-olds and over-65s, which the organisers say shows that cycling is open and accessible to all ages. The eponymous sponsor, KÉSZ Csoport, took part with 21 riders.

2024 was the second edition of the KÉSZ Group Balatonfondo cycling race, which has become a true cycling celebration on the shores of Lake Balaton in Balatonfüred. On an extremely cold Saturday morning in September, reminiscent of November, nearly a thousand riders gathered to compete in the various distances. The composition of the competitors also showed the diversity of cycling, with more than 10 percent of the riders being women and a significant number of foreign riders.

Cycling is becoming increasingly popular

Dr. Domonkos Schneller, the main patron of the event, the president of the Hungarian Cycling Federation, who also participated in the race, said after the finish: "This day has once again proved that cycling has gained more and more popularity in Hungary in recent years. The perseverance and performance of the riders is an inspiration to us all, as they all crossed the finish line successfully and, most importantly, without any accidents." He added:

"It is especially gratifying that the amateurs have role models like Attila Valter, who participated in the event as an ambassador, Dina Marci, who also skates here, or Blanka Vas, who achieve outstanding results not only at home but also internationally. They are living examples that cycling has a future in Hungary."

The race was adapted to the weather

"To go through the first really cold race of the year in such harsh weather conditions with such stamina is a huge achievement. In addition to the amateur competitors, it is also worth watching the results of the youngsters, many of whom could be looking at a professional career. The strong winds at the end of the race confirmed the organisers' decision to go for the mediofondo instead of the longer, windy sections. It was safe that way", added Attila Valter, who participated in the event in an ambassadorial role. Hungarian road cyclist Márton Dina also stressed how much she enjoyed the race:

"On Lake Balaton it's always a pleasure to cycle, even in these challenging conditions. The cool weather and the wind made it difficult, but the sunshine in the middle of the race sometimes helped to bring the motivation back."

The podium was open to both young and older age groups

In spite of the weather, many people competed and all of them finished. In 2024, the top step of the podium was taken by both 15-year-olds and over-65s, showing that cycling is open and accessible to all ages. In addition to the official race programme, children were also represented, with the youngest podium finisher being a three-year-old girl.

Team spirit is also strong in the company

The KÉSZ Group Balatonfondo's eponymous sponsors were also actively involved in the event, Mihály Varga, Founder of KÉSZ Csoport and Chairman of the Supervisory Board said: "It was a great pleasure for me to participate in this race with my colleagues - 21 of us bowled together and another 17 helped the riders with refreshment points. KÉSZ Csoport has always believed in the power of community and that sport can help to strengthen this bond even further. Once again we have proven that as a team we can always rise to whatever the challenge."

The race was not just about performance, but also about community, with a range of additional services available to drivers, from service to refreshment points. And after the race, the wellness services of the Balatonfüred Municipal Swimming Pool were waiting for the participants, where they could relax and regenerate after the hard fights. And next spring, those who started this year's race but chose a shorter distance due to the weather will be given a discounted entry, so they will have the opportunity to tackle the longer distances again.
