The 10th anniversary celebration of MERKBAU's Győr office was held in Pannonhalma.

As one of the companies with the most complex portfolios in Hungary, the MERKBAU Group has become known for its quality-oriented execution. Among their nationwide network of offices, the Győr Main Construction Management Office stands out, with its close ties to the Pannonhalma Archabbey, which is hosting the tenth anniversary celebrations.

It all started here

In his welcome speech at the ceremony on 12 September, András Horváth, Deputy Director of Production, emphasised not only their emotional attachment to the site but also the many years of work they have done here. As he said:

"We have many ties to Pannonhalma. We have lived with the projects for a long time. From the point of view of the Győr Chief Architectural Office, this is where it all started, because although we had some previous projects in the region, it was with Pannonhalma that we really got our feet wet. One of the personal benefits of this is that my colleague Gábor Miklós and I have chosen the area as our place of residence.

"For me, it is particularly meaningful to be standing here in the Abbey's ceremonial hall almost 10 years after the work was done," he continued. "It seems tiny, but it was a sophisticated project: a Turkish fortress wall and a Baroque bastion were all there to welcome us in this space of just 250 square metres. It took years to forget the difficulties here, but, as a colleague of mine said, you need a little tension to feel the difficulty of the work and therefore the weight."

In total, the Chief Architectural Office has worked on 52 projects over the past 16 years, which they were proud to present to the audience celebrating with Gábor Miklós together with his business manager colleague .

A strong pillar for development

The members of MERKBAU's Board of Directors and Supervisory Board, the employees of the Győr office, the colleagues of the construction division, the heads of the MERKBAU Group companies and the external guests were then welcomed by János Knáb, Chairman of the Board of Directors, who emphasized that he was a student and had the opportunity to get to know this historic institution, which the company had worked for years to build.

"Behind every builder there are some very memorable projects, for us this is the case with the many developments at Pannonhalma Abbey. Although we are celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Győr Chief Construction Office, MERKBAU's presence in Győr is 20 years old - the first experiences can be dated back to 2004."

"For the construction of one of the Audi units," we were told, "a bid was also invited from Germany from Walter Bau, which was then Germany's largest construction company. Since we were working with them in Germany, we also bid as a consortium for the Audi project. But in 2005, Walter Bau went bankrupt during the project, so the question was, what about us? Because we did the work with integrity, we developed a relationship with Audi that has led to close cooperation to this day."

Around the 2008 crisis, the company was building the first phase of the Sauska winery in Villány when it was invited to tender for the construction of the Pannonhalmi winery. They won the tender to build the Pannonhalmi winery.

"In fact, we not only survived the crisis, but we were also able to grow, thanks to this project", stressed János Knáb.

But not only that, there are also many award-winning projects that are a testament to the success of working with excellent colleagues and skilled subcontractors, and they can be extremely proud of that. In concluding his congratulations, the Chairman of the Board also expressed his faith in the future of the company:

"MERKBAU will be 34 years old this year, during this long time our head offices and offices have been opened in Budapest, Győr, Polgár, Pécs and Szeged. I sincerely wish the Győr Main Construction Management Team to continue to be strong pillars of the company as it continues to grow.

Participants were able to visit all the important sites

After the speeches and presentations on the work done so far, the participants had a tour of the basketball hall, which they approached via the tunnel and returned to the car park via the upper bridge. From there, guests walked down to the Viator restaurant, where cold hors d'oeuvres, hot main courses and desserts awaited the guests. After dinner, the guests were treated to a seven-course wine tasting at the Abbey's winery.
