The current runway will be retained, and the new airport will be built on the site of the former runway, which is in a poor state of repair and has been demolished.

A huge investment has taken a significant step towards realisation in Debrecen, with plans for a new runway at the airport , according to an article published on dehir.hu. László Papp, the city's mayor, announced on his Facebook page that he had signed the contract. The city leader had previously commented on the project at the end of last year, as reported by vg.hu reported with reference to Cívishír when he announced that a conditional public procurement tender would be issued for the design of the airport's new runway and taxiways. The current step is a logical follow-up to this.

„The airport plays an important role in both leisure and business tourism. This development could further increase passenger traffic at Debrecen International Airport.”wrote László Papp in his social media post today.

There are already regular services to several Western European cities and two tourist islands

The mayor told Debrecen Television's Public Affairs programme last week,

The current runway will be retained, and a new runway will be built at Debrecen airport to replace the former runway, which is in poor condition and has been demolished. When the new runway is ready, with the navigation system, flights will be transferred to it.

dehir.hu also summarises: there are currently regular flights from Debrecen to London, Cyprus and Munich, operated by airlines Lufthansa and Wizz Air, and just this Sunday, Malta-based Universal Air also started a scheduled flight to Leipzig and Malta. Ryanair is also considering launching flights to Debrecen, and summer charter destinations are listed.
