Important step in the Buda tram extension project - search for the contractor
We have previously written several times about the second phase of the highly successful Buda tram network project: most recently about two years ago, when the team working on the project plans Főmterv Mérnöki Tervező Zrt. was working on the project plans. rel="noopener">reported on it. The leading domestic infrastructure designer was already nearing the end of the project at that point.
Connecting up to a new part of the city
The EU Public Procurement Bulletin has now published information stating that the Ministry of Construction and Transport Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium is seeking a contractor for the implementation of the second phase of the Buda tram network, i.e. the construction of a tram line from Műegyetem rakpart to the MOL headquarters and the Kopaszi gát area. This would extend the tram line to the new district in District XI, which is being developed as part of the Property Market Kft. investment, the new District XI, which is being developed as part of the Market Építő Zrt. investment, the new XI. district neighbourhood, the BudaPartot project, meeting existing and constantly growing public transport needs (not to mention Infopark and the university campuses).
Last but not least, this would connect tram line 1 and the Southern Circular Railway currently under construction to the Buda network. The public procurement has been conditionally announced and is planned to be implemented with post-financing from the EU's IKOP PLUSZ framework.
According to the description, the contractor's task would be to build a double-track tramway on 2.8 kilometres of track (i.e. a total of 5.6 tracks), of which at least 1.2 km of track is planned to be paved with grass, and 7 pairs of new barrier-free stops are also included in the tasks, as well as a new terminal building at the Dombóvári junction.
When the design was announced, we reported that the seven pairs of stops were expected to be
- on St Gellért Square,
- on the Technological University quay at Bertalan Lajos Street,
- at the Buda end of the Petőfi bridge,
- on the Pázmány Péter promenade in line with the southern block of ELTE,
- at the Buda end of the Rákóczi Bridge,
- at the Nádorkert railway station
- and at the Budafok/Dombóvári út terminus.
Urban planning is also in the pipeline
As explained in the just-published tender, the tasks include the landscaping of the Upper Quay and the Dombóvári road up to Budafoki út (this would involve planting nearly 400 trees and more than 27,000 shrubs). In addition, 2.66 kilometres of continuous quayside promenade and cycling infrastructure are planned between Szent Gellért Square and Rákóczi Bridge.
The project would require the construction of 2850 m of overhead lines and, among other things, the reconstruction and extension of the BKV DC network, with the reconstruction of street lighting and the replacement of utilities.
