A public park is being built in Szeged on a closed, abandoned site

The Szeged local government is creating a park on land that has been closed for decades, according to szeged.hu. The 107 million forint investment will be carried out by Miksi Bau Kft. and is expected to be completed by the end of May 2024.

The public park in the former Gyevi cemetery on the Szamos Street side will have paved and pavement walkways, benches and drinking fountains, in addition to street lighting and a surveillance camera system.

The area will also be planted with trees, perennials and shrubs. Horticultural advice has also been sought on which plant species will survive in these conditions, depending on soil conditions. Accordingly, the planting plan includes a large number of species.

The area had several development plans

The article in szeged.hu also reveals that the former church cemetery is a very unfortunate site, having been closed for decades and subsequently sold by the church. The individual owners had several development plans, none of which materialised.

The Szamos Street part of the area became the property of the local municipality, and the decision on the public park was based on the needs of the residents - the newspaper quoted Sándor Nagy, deputy mayor of Szeged. He added, however, that the part along József Attila Avenue will still be used for commercial purposes, while the construction of the Spar store has not started due to the law on shopping centres.

According to the article, work has already begun, the area has been fenced off and excavation work has started. The Szeged municipality has received a grant of HUF 80 million to create the park. The total cost of the development is HUF 107 million: the difference of HUF 27 million is financed by the municipality from its own resources.
