In May, Budapesters will be able to take possession of the expanded pop-up park, with further developments to follow.

Work began on Monday on the expansion of the Budapest City Hall Park, and the expanded pop-up park in District V will be open to Budapest residents from May, the Mayor's Office said on 8 April.

The current 4,000 square metres of open space will be increased to 7,000.

"The City Hall Park promises an escape from the city noise in the centre of Budapest with exciting solutions, unique street furniture and plants," they wrote.

Closed area to be opened in the future

They added that the next step in the development of the City Hall block will be the final design of the City Hall Park, as promised earlier, according to the winning design in the design competition. This will be implemented in the coming years, after the ongoing renovation of the City Hall facade.

"One of the important commitments of the current city administration was to create the City Hall Park on the site of the former run-down courtyard, which was closed off to the city's residents, as part of the development of the City Hall block," they recalled.

According to the Mayor's Office, their aim is to create a new, open, green main square in Budapest.

As part of the process, the Merlin building has been renewed in recent years, and the comprehensive renovation of the facade of the City Hall facing Károly Boulevard is nearing completion.

To mark Budapest's 150th birthday, the City Hall Passage has opened, providing free access to the City Hall courtyard between Károly körút and Városház utca, where an outdoor exhibition has also been opened, according to a press release.
