The building in Miskolc is being renovated in a project linked to the development of the Stos Spa in Slovakia.

The Hungarian-Slovak project to renovate the Hungarian-born Oscar-winning screenwriter Imre Pressburger's birthplace in Miskolc has started, the CineFest Association announced on 4 March.

According to the announcement, the European Union has awarded the Hungarian part of the project to the CineFest Association with a grant of approximately EUR 562.5 thousand (HUF 218 million), while the North Hungarian Informatics Management Nonprofit Kft. has received a grant of EUR 54,842 thousand (approximately HUF 21 million).

Artists, students and schoolchildren will also have space at the Pressburger House

The project will create a space that will serve as a digital art incubation space and will also host exhibitions, digital installations and workshops. In addition, the building will also serve as an art studio and an educational space for the University of Miskolc and art high schools in the region, they said.

Imre Pressburger's birthplace is planned to make the film archive of CineFest researchable, and in addition to contributing to the promotion of Hungarian film history through its permanent exhibitions, it will also provide screening rooms and professional programme spaces for the CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival.

The Hungarian side of the renovation teamed up with the CineFest Association and the North Hungarian IT Management Nonprofit Kft. to renovate the building and put it at the service of the community.

Combining relaxation and art

The initiative has been joined as a lead partner by the Slovakian non-profit organisation Kúpele Štós, who are transforming the former heating house on the grounds of the Stos Spa into a "space for a cross-border art project".

The investment aims to enhance the tourism and tourist assets of the Kosice region and the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county. This will be achieved by creating new tourist destinations and services based on a sustainable tangible and intangible cultural heritage, which will contribute to the social, educational and economic development of both regions," they said.

The investment is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Hungarian state under the Interreg Hungary-Slovakia Programme "Creating visual and media arts spaces for cross-border cooperation".
